Tim opened his eyes to the sound of a duck quacking. Actually, it was his cell phone, and he only used that ringtone for one person: Rebecca Anna Scott.

But why the hell was she calling him at this hour of the morning, and exactly what hour of the morning was it? Tim glanced at his iPhone to reveal that is was 6:23 a.m.

If it was really all that important, Rebecca would call back.

She did at exactly 6:26 a.m. “Good morning, what’s up?” Tim asked casually.

“Funny, that was exactly what I was going to say, Tim. Except it was more along the lines of, what the fuck is going on down there?”

That was a very good question, Tim thought. After Katie had been attacked by Monica, she’d thrown a punch that broke the other woman’s jaw. Monica would be eating through a straw for the next six weeks. Meanwhile, the fat little Detective Joey had called the Captain of the Collier County CID, who in turned called the local US Marshals Service in Miami, who told him that they had no clue who Tim Hall and Katie McNamara were, but they were not US Marshals.

Captain Lou and Detectives Joey and Jill were just about to slap the cuffs on Tim and Katie when Captain’s Lou’s phone sounded. It was the Sheriff of Collier County himself, who had just gotten off the phone with one of the Deputy Attorney Generals of the United States, who was a personal friend of his and had asked, as his friend, if the Sheriff would make a special effort to accommodate Deputies Hall and McNamara. This happened at 4 a.m. At 4:05, the US Marshals of Dade County, Florida called Captain Lou back to tell him that there had been a terrible mistake and yes, Deputies Hall and McNamara were indeed Marshals who were on a special assignment for the Attorney General and should be afforded every consideration possible. At that point, all Tim wanted was a place to take a nap, which is how he ended up on Captain Lou’s couch in the Captain’s office.

All of this information raced through Tim’s head in about 15 seconds. “Well, I’m pretty sure my girlfriend is still alive, or at least not one of the burn victims,” was Tim’s reply to Rebecca’s question.

Rebecca just sighed. “You have not lived until you’ve had to call up an Attorney General at 2:30 a.m. in order to tell them that their ‘special mission’ is in danger because one of our highly trained agents broke the jaw of a suspect in police custody.”

“That could not be helped,” Tim replied, defending Katie.

“Even though one of the detectives told Katie that the suspect was dangerous?”

Rebecca certainly seemed to have all of the details of the fight.

“Well, I think the important news is that Mary Ann is probably still alive.”

“I suppose so, Tim. We do have some initial results back on the DNA. Want to hear them?”

Of course Tim wanted to hear them, but he could tell that Rebecca was stringing him along.
